乘坐国际航班，有时会需要转机才能到达目的地。如果接下来要搭的飞机不久后马上要起飞，旅客不必出机场，在办理转机手续的柜台即可办理登机手续。但若飞机还要过好一阵子才会开，许多国家规定，只要办妥转机手续，即使没有过境签证，也可以离开机场去观光。
那么如果当天没有可以转乘的飞机呢？旅客就只好在转机的地方过夜了，膳宿一般由当地的航空公司安排。如果是由于航空公司方面延误原定的衔接时间，航空公司会免费提供膳宿、交通，并负责安排好旅客接下来的行程衔接。

入境美国的旅客下机后，需要按照入境签证的不同，排队等候检查。持非移民签证者（F1）应排在非移民（non-residents）的队伍，持移民签证或绿卡者则要排在居民（citizens / residents）的行列。
接受检查时，旅客要将护照、I-20或IAP-66、I-94及申报单一并交给海关人员查验。光是持有护照和签证并不保证可以入境。因为签证只赋予持有人要求入境的权利，准许入境的决定权还是掌握在移民官手中。海关人员会核对黑名单，确认该旅客在移民局是否有过不良记录，如果有不良记录，就可能会被拒绝入境。照惯例，海关人员会询问旅客一些问题，主要是关于到美国之后住哪里、到美国的目的及携带多少钱等。
