Topic 2 Interpersonal Communication
(人际交往)

China has the 1 (distinct) of respecting the aged and cherishing the young. Contrary to popular belief, however, older people generally do not want to live with their children.

According to the latest 2 (analyze), about 80% of people 65 years old and older have frequent contact with their children. About 75% of elderly parents 3 don't go to nursing homes live within 30 minutes for the sake of 4 (convenient).

However, 5 (mere) having contact with children does not guarantee happiness in old age. So far, some researchers 6 (find) that people who are most associated with their families have the lowest spirits. So it is more likely 7 poor health, not just family involvement, deepens spirits.

Increasingly, researchers have begun to look at the quality of relationships, rather than at the frequency of contact, between the elderly and their children. If parents and children come to a compromise 8 taking good care of children, they are likely to enjoy each other's company. Disagreements on such matters can turn out 9 (be) problems. If parents are angered by their daughter's divorce, dislike her new husband, and disapprove of how she is raising 10 grandchildren, chances are that they are not going to enjoy her visits.

The relationship between parents and children has always been a hot topic. Many students may feel 1 (stress) because of their parents. Most parents have good intentions, 2 some of them aren't very helpful with the problems their sons and daughters have in 3 (adjust) to college, and a few of them seem to go out of their way to add to their children's 4 (difficulty)

For one thing, parents are often not aware of the kinds of problems their children face. They don't realize that the 5 (compete) is stronger, that the required standards of work are 6 (high), and that their children maynot be prepared for 7 change. They may be upset by their children's poor grades. At their kindest, they may 8 (gentle) ask why John or Mary isn't doing better, whether he or she is trying as hard as he or she could, and so on. At their worst, they may threaten 9 (take) their children out of college or cut off living expenses.

Sometimes parents think it right and natural that they determine 10 their children should do with their lives. They forget that everyone is different and that each person must develop in his or her own way.

Building Trust in a Relationship Again

Trust is a learned behavior that we gain from past experiences. 1 That is a risk. But you can't be successful when there's a lack of trust in a relationship that results from an action where the wrongdoer takes no responsibility to fix the mistake.

Unfortunately, we’ve all been victims of betrayal. Whether we’ve been suffer from, lied to, misled, or cheated on, there are different levels of losing trust. Sometimes people simply can't trust anymore. 2 It's understandable, but if you're willing to build trust in a relationship again, we have some steps you can take to get you there.

3 Having confidence in yourself will help you make better choices because you can see what the best outcome would be for your well-being.

4 If you’ve been betrayed, you are the victim of your circumstance. But there's a difference between being a victim and living with a “victim mentality”. At some point in all of our lives, we'll have our trust tested or violated.

◆ You didn't lose “everything”. Once trust is lost, what is left? Instead of looking at the situation from this hopeless angle, look at everything you still have and be thankful for all of the good in your life. 5 Instead, it's a healthy way to work through the experience to allow room for positive growth and forgiveness.

A. Learn to really trust yourself.

B. It is putting confidence in someone.

C. Stop regarding yourself as the victim.

D. Remember that you can expect the best in return.

E. They’ve been too badly hurt and they can't bear to let it happen again.

F. This knowledge carries over in their attitude toward their future relationships.

G. Seeing the positive side of things doesn't mean you're ignoring what happened.

In your life, whether intentionally or accidentally you may offend someone close to you. What you do about it will make the most difference. Learning how to say sorry in the right way will help you repair and keep the important relationships in your life.

The best place to start is at the beginning. It is normal to be scared as you ask for forgiveness and say you are sorry. Make sure you get it right and practice in the mirror. 1

2 Don't apologize if you don't really feel sorry. More bad will come than good if you say you are sorry without any meaning. It may ruin any future attempts and apologies that are sincere.

Make sure that you can admit wrong doing. Telling them that you are wrong helps them see that you know what you have done has offended them. 3 They may not want to know why, or if they do, they will ask.

Then find out how you can make it right with them. 4 Make sure that if you agree to make things right, do them completely without causing offence.

Let them know that you will never do it again. Let your friend or whoever you offended know that you have no intention of repeating your mistake. This will help them know that they aren't being taken advantage of.

Ask them for forgiveness. But it is their choice whether they give it to you or not. Being truly sorry means that you want to put the whole mess behind you and being forgiven means that it will never be mentioned again.

Learning from past mistakes and offences can make the future of your relationship much brighter.

A. Apologize if you really mean it.

B. Practice will help you calm down.

C. Apology will make a big difference.

D. It may be physical, emotional or financial

E. You may give them a reason for your action, but you don't have to.

F. Forgive yourself since everyone makes mistakes.

读后拓展 【微阅读】Generation Lap (代圈)

We often hear about the “generation gap” that occurs between parents and children when it comes to music, morals, fashion and a host of other things. Now there is a generation lap, the tendency for young people to be increasingly more technically savvy than their parents or elders. This gap exists in the use of technology where the young generation has become the authority, effectively flipping the typical parental and professional hierarchy on its head in many respects.

3 They may not want to know why, or if they do, they will ask. 该空的前后句意思在逻辑上是转折关系,故E项(你也许会向他们解释自己这样做的原因,但没必要)符合前后文的语境。 JPudCHT6nW2VSHkZZmVcjIKrIAhGj5/2z9ZQoikSGO0alKVOWgyT3scDPTdM/7BZ
