Success Comes with a High EQ

Most students do an IQ test early in their school career. Even if they never see their results, they feel that their IQ is 1 determines how well they are going to do in life. When they see other students doing better than them, they usually believe that those students have a 2 (high) IQ and that there is nothing they can do 3 (change) facts. However, new research into EQ suggests that success is not 4 (simple) the result of a high IQ.

While your IQ tells you how 5 (intelligence) you are, your EQ tells you how well you use your intelligence. Professor Salovery, who 6 (invent) the term EQ, gives the following 7 (describe):At work, it is IQ 8 gets you promoted. 9 (support) by his academic research, Professor Salovery suggests that when 10 (predict) someone's future success, their character, as measured by EQ tests, might actually matter more than their IQ.

Until recently, I didn't have a very healthy lifestyle. I worked 1 a publisher for a large company based in London, 2 I was always under pressure to meet deadlines and get the books 3 (publish). The schedules were really busy last year, and there was a lot of stress in my working life. Don't get me wrong,my working conditions were fine. I had a large office, with a beautiful view over the Thames. I had th 4 (late) computer and a secretary too. In addition, I earned a very good salary. The problem was that my worklife balance was completely wrong. I was away from my lovely home in the country far too much. And not only 5 I work very long hours, but I had to commute into London every day by train 6 (get) to the office

One Friday evening, after the journey home had taken me four hours because of 7 rail accident,I decided I had to get out of the rat race. If I wanted to improve my quality of life and have more time for myself, my family and friends, then I needed a nine-to-five job, 8 would give me more free time. Next day I saw an ad for a sales 9 (assist) in a local bookshop and put my house on the market. If I was going to downshift, then I needed to make some economies—and a smaller home was the first step. I 10 (work)in the bookshop and living in my cottage ever since.

A Garden That's Just Right for You

Have you ever visited a garden that seemed just right for you, where the atmosphere of the garden appeared to total more than the sum (总和) of its parts? 1. But it doesn't happen by accident. It starts with looking inside yourself and understanding who you are with respect to the natural world and how you approach the gardening process.

2

Some people may think that a garden is no more than plants, flowers, patterns and masses of color.Others are concerned about using gardening methods that require less water and fewer fertilizers (肥料). 3 . However, there are a number of other reasons that might explain why you want to garden. One of them comes from our earliest years.

● Recall (回忆) your childhood memories

Our model of what a garden should be often goes back to childhood. Grandma's rose garden and Dad's vegetable garden might be good or bad, but that's not what's important. 4 —how being in those gardens made us feel. If you’d like to build a powerful bond with your garden, start by taking some time to recall the gardens of your youth. 5 , then go outside and work out a plan to translate your childhood memories into your grown-up garden. Have fun. (2016全国卷II)

Every one complains. Even if you argue that you are the happiest person in the world, you still complain sometimes. Sometimes you complain without even realizing it, but rarely is it ever helpful. 1 Here are some tips to stop complaining and give up the negative thoughts:

2

When you find yourself thinking or saying a negative comment about something or someone, stop and force yourself to say something positive instead. Seek the help of a cheerful friend to change you when you complain and help you to see the positive in the situation.

Make a list of things we are grateful for.

We often complain about the things we don't have without noticing those things we already have. Be grateful for what we have in our life because we are lucky simply for being ourselves. Set down things we are thankful for and we'll see that we don't have any reason to complain.

Learn to adapt to the changes.

There are many things we can't change. 3 Always find the positive side of each situation, regardless of however difficult the situation is. With parents’ and friends’ support, we can survive any life changes

Allow yourself to vent(发泄)your feelings every once in a while.

Constantly ignored negative thoughts could add up. If you are really going through a rough time, don't be afraid to share your feelings with a close friend or family member or see a therapist.

Find what makes you happy.

4 Maybe it is time to make the hard decision to move on to another job or career. Uncover whatyour biggest complaints are about and see if you can change the situation to make yourself happy. Choose happiness, focus on the positive, and be kind always!

A. Change the way you think.

B. Make positive people friends.

C. The best and only thing we can do is to accept them.

D. Are you constantly complaining about your present job?

E. Sometimes this list can be easy, full of hobbies you enjoy.

F. So how can you manage to force yourselves to end complaining?

读后拓展 【微阅读】 Micropark (微型公园)

A micropark refers to a small, usually temporary, public park set up in a street parking spot.

微型公园是指在街上的停车位上建起的小小的,通常是临时的公园。 (编者注:从词根上看,micro是指“微小的”,park是“公园”,所以不难理解micropark是“微型公园”的意思。)

Busy people don't always have time to go to the park. So Grow It Green Morristown took the park to them. The nonprofit converted a parking space into a micropark. Hay bales, a picnic table and canopy attempted to re-create the relaxed feel of the Urban Farm at Lafayette.

+hSpxXUPOfMv2vCvqMTp6G8/jYsPe96rYfGKY1jIYSpYgyzwahuWl8Yp5aGscj1X
