Chinatown in San Francisco is the largest one outside of Asia. It is also the oldest Chinatown in North America. It is one of the favourite places that tourists to San Francisco like to go.
Americans can go on a walking tour of Chinatown and learn how one of the oldest cultures in the world stays strong on the other side of the world. Do you wonder what American people learn about Chinese culture when they visit there?
First stop on the tour is a fortune cookie factory. Visitors watch as fortune cookies are made right in front of them. First, the cookie is made flat. Then the words are put on one side of the cookie. Next, a machine shapes the cookie. It is all done very quickly before the cookie gets hard. Visitors are always surprised at how fast fortune cookies are made.
Some of the buildings in Chinatown are very old. The Chinese language school is one of these. Visitors to the school learn that the Chinese do not have an alphabet. They use characters instead of letters and each character is a word. Over 800 students go to this school to learn how to read and write Chinese languages and to learn about the Chinese culture.
One of the things American women love about Chinese culture is their dresses. Silk dresses are thought to be very beautiful and the Chinese traditional ones are popular. Women go to the Chinatown night market to shop for them. People also shop at that market for CDs and DVDs in the Chinese languages. Of course, the Chinese are known for selling inexpensive items so everyone who shops there is looking for something that doesn't cost a lot of money.
On special days, people come to Chinatown to see how Chinese people celebrate. Visitors love to watch the lion dances, Kung Fu shows and listen to a Chinese opera. These shows are very beautiful to watch. Chinese musical instruments like the erhu are also very interesting to Americans who have never heard or seen one before.
