What are they like?

An Australian couple was honored this year for having the longest marriage in the country. Rose, 100 years old, and her husband Joe, 102 years old, have been married for 84 years. They talk about what they love about each other and about their life together.

“I fell in love with him because he was funny,” Rose said, “He knew how to tell a joke and make everyone laugh. It made him very popular with the girls.”

“She was friendly and talkative,” said Joe, “We became best friends and I think that was important for keeping our relationship happy. We just liked each other very much.”

“Everyone told us it wouldn't last,” said Rose, “We were married so many years ago. At that time woman only wanted a hardworking, honest man who made a lot of money. I didn't care if Joe was rich or poor; hardworking or lazy. I just wanted a man who was polite and loved me.”

The couple met at a party when they were teenagers. Joe fell instantly in love with Rose.“She was such a beauty,” Joe said, “I thought it was amazing that she talked to me that night. It was even more amazing that she said she would go out on a date with me.”

Even though they have sometimes disagreed, they always got through it. They were always honest with each other and polite even when they were angry. They talked about their problems until they had a friendly relationship again. “Our fights always end with Joe telling me a joke,” said Rose, “I find it funny and start laughing and then I can't stay angry at him any longer.”
