One year after the great success of The Wizard of Oz , the author L. Frank Baum decided to make his story into a play. So in June 1902, the comedy musical The Wizard of Oz opened at the Majestic Theater in Chicago. It was met with so much praise that another play by the same name opened on Broadway in New York City the following year. This production became one of Broadway's greatest successes, and continued as a road show for the next ten years. In 1939, MGM decided to make a film version of the story.

The Wizard of Oz was one of the first color movies made. For effect, only the scenes in Oz were filmed in color, while the scenes that took place in Kansas were filmed in black-and-white.
>The movie was incredibly successful, and was nominated for six Academy Awards, including"Best Picture". The film was recently declared as "the most favorite movie of the twentieth century" by People Magazine. The fact that it was regularly shown on television many times between 1956 and 1974, meant that it was seen by more people than any other movie in history!
