Discuss your ideas on the following questions.
●Have you ever had a job?
●Which do you think is more important: education or work experience?
●What do you think about having a job while you are studying?
Listen to a conversation between two students.
Mia: Hey, Jay! What’s up?
Jay: Not much. How are you doing, Mia?
Mia: Not very well. I fell asleep in class yesterday. Well… Professor Toni didn’t notice, but I feel really bad, and I don’t know if I missed something important.
Jay: Well, it probably wasn’t that bad. Everybody falls asleep in class sometimes, especially when the class is boring.
Mia: That’s true. But I don’t even know what homework he assigned.
Jay: No worries, I got your back. I have notes for that class. You can take a look if you want. And you shouldn’t panic! Learning doesn’t only happen in the classroom. I learned a lot from my job, for example. I was a field engineer assistant during the last summer break. And you know what happened? On my first day of work, I had to work 16 hours, late into the night. I got a lot of hands-on experience. I think it’s much more important to learn on the job than in a classroom environment.
Mia: Hey, I didn’t know you worked as an engineer. You never told me that before. That’s so cool!
Jay: Yeah, I guess I never had a chance to talk about it. But the point is, sometimes, seeking adventure and expanding your horizons is what really matters.
Mia: That’s a great idea. Maybe I should try to experience more and learn something different, like you did.
Jay: Yeah, why not? Hey, just a heads up, it’s Professor Mary’s class this afternoon. Trust me, you don’t want to fall asleep in her class.
Mia: Ok, thanks. I’ll try not to.
