1. The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island.
2. He prayed feve shly for God to rescue him, and every day he scanned the ho zon for help, but none emed forthcoming.
3. Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of d ftwood to protect him from the elements, and to store his few pos ssions.
4. But then one day, after scavenging for food, he ar ved home to find his little hut in flames, the s ke rolling up to the sky.
5. The worst had happened; everything was lost. He was stunned with g ef and anger. “God, how could you do this to me！” he c ed.
6. Early the next day, however, he was awakened by the sound of a ship that was approaching the island. It had come to rescue him.
7. “How did you know I was here？” asked the weary man of his rescuers.
8. “We saw your s ke signal.” they replied.
9. It is easy to get discouraged when things are going bad. But we shouldn’ t lo heart, becau God is at work in our lives, even in the midst of pain and suffe ng.
10. Remember, next time your little hut is burning to the ground it just may be a s ke signal that sum ns the grace of God.
11. For all the negative things we have to say to our lves, God has a positive answer.

9. 人在碰到困难时，很容易会沮丧。不过，无论受到折磨或者痛苦，都不用因此失去信心，因为上帝一直在我们心里面做着奇妙的工作。

A Goodbye Kiss爸爸的道别之吻
1. The Board Meeting had come to an end. Bob starred to stand up and jostled the table, spilling his coffee over his notes. “How embarrassing. I am getting so clumsy in my old age.”
2. Everyone had a good laugh, and soon we were all telling sto es of our st embarrassing ments. It came around to Frank who sat quietly listening to the others. Someone said, “Come on, Frank. Tell us your st embarrassing ment.”
3. Frank began, “I grew up in San Pedro. My Dad was a fisherman, and he loved the a. He had his own boat, but it was hard making a living on the a. He worked hard and would stay out until he caught enough to feed his family. Not just enough for our family, but also for his Mom and Dad and the other kids that were still and home.” He looked at us and said, “I wish you could have met my Dad. He was a big man, and he was strong from pulling the nets and fighting the as for his catch. When you got clo to him, he smelled the ocean.”
4. Frank’ s voice dropped a bit. “When the weather was bad he would d ve me to school. He would pull ght up in front, and it emed like everybody would be standing around and watching. Then he would lean over and give me a big kiss on the cheek and tell me to be a good boy. It was so embarrassing for me. Here I was twelve years old, and my Dad would lean over and kiss me goodbye！”
5. He pau d and then went on, “I remember the day I thought I was too old for a good-bye kiss. When we got the school and came to a stop, he had his usual big smile. He started to lean toward me, but I put my hand up and said, ‘No, Dad.’ It was the first time I had ever talked to him that way, and he had this surp d looked on his face.”
6. “I said, ‘Dad, I’ m too old for a good-bye kiss. I’ m too old for any kind of kiss.’ My Dad looked at me for the longest tine, and his eyes started to tear up. I had never en him cry. He turned and looked out the windshield. ‘You’ re ght,’ he said. ‘You are a big boy... a man. I won’ t kiss you any re…’”
7. For the ment, Frank got a funny look on his face, and the tears began to well up in his eyes. “It wasn’ t long after that when my Dad went to a and never came back.”
8. I looked at Frank and saw that tears were nning down his cheeks. Frank spoke again. “ Guys, you don’ t know what I would give to have my Dad give me just one re kiss on the cheek... to feel his rough old face... to smell the ocean on him... to feel his arm around my neck. I wish I had been a man then. If I had been a man, I would be a man; I would never have told my Dad I was too old for a good-bye kiss.”

4. 弗兰克的声音低了一点： “天气不好的时候，爸爸会开车送我们去学校。他会把车停在学校正门口，好像每个人都能站在一旁观看。然后，他弯下身子在我脸上重重的亲了一口，告诉我要做一个好孩子。这让我觉得很难为情。那时我已经12岁了，而爸爸还俯身给我一个道别的亲吻。”
5. 弗兰克停顿了一下，又继续说道： “我还记得那天。我认为自己已经长大到不再合适一个道别亲吻了。当我们到了学校停下来的时候，像往常一样爸爸露出了灿烂的笑容，他开始向我俯下身来，然后我抬手挡住了他， ‘不，爸爸。’ 那是我第一次那样对他说话，他十分吃惊。”
6. “我说道： ‘爸爸，我已经长大了，大到不再适合接受一个道别亲吻了。也不再适合任何的亲吻了。’ 爸爸盯着我看了好长时间，潸然泪下。我从来未见过他哭泣。他转过身子，透过挡风玻璃向外望去： ‘没错，你已经是一个大男孩儿……一个男子汉了。我以后再也不这样亲吻你了。’”

If Only I Had Known…假如我知道……
1. Thomas Carlyle lived from 1795 until 1881. He was a Scot essayist and histo an. Du ng his lifetime he became one of the world’ s greatest w ters. But he was a human and humans make mistakes.
2. On October 17, 1826, Carlyle mar ed his cretary Jane Welsh. She was an intelligent, attractive and somewhat temperamental daughter of a well-to-do doctor. They had their quarrels and misunderstandings, but still loved each other dearly.
3. After their mar age, Jane continued to rve as his cretary. But, after veral years of mar age, Jane became ill. Being a hard worker, Carlyle became so absorbed in his w tings that he let Jane continue working for veral weeks after she became ill. She had cancer, and though it was one of the slow growing kinds, she finally became confined to her bed. Although Carlyle loved her dearly, he very ldom found time to stay with her long. He was busy with his work.
4. When Jane died they car ed her to the cemetery for the rvice. The day was a mi rable day. It was raining hard and the mud was deep. Following the funeral Carlyle went back to his home. He was taking it pretty hard. He went up the stairs to Jane’ s room and sat down in the chair next to her bed. He sat there thinking about how little time he had spent with her and wishing so much he had a chance to do it differently. Noticing her diary on a table beside the bed, he picked it up and began to read it. Suddenly he emed shocked. He saw it. There, on one page, she had w tten a single line. “Yesterday he spent an hour with me and it was like heaven; I love him so.”
5. Something dawned on him that he had not noticed before. He had been too busy to notice that he meant so much to her. He thought of all the times he had gone about his work without thinking about and noticing her. Then Carlyle turned the page in the dairy. There he noticed that she had w tten some words that broke his heart. “I have listened all day to hear his steps in the hall, but now it is late and I guess he won’ t come today.”
6. Carlyle read a little re in the book. Then he threw it down and ran out of the hou. Some of his f ends found him at the grave, his face bu ed in the mud. His eyes were red from weeping. Tears continued to roll down his cheeks. He kept repeating over and over again, “If I had only known, if I had only known…” But it was too late for Carlyle. She was dead.
7. After Jane’ s death, Carlyle made little attempt to w te again. The histo ans say he lived another 15 years, “weary, bored and a partial reclu.” I shared the story with you in the hope that you will not make the same mistake. While our loved ones must have the ney we make to live, it is the love that they really want. Give it now before it is too late.
