We Had Been Confused Before
What Does Little Birdie Say?
(一)
What does little birdie say,
In her nest at peep of day?
Let me fly, says little birdie,
Mother, let me fly away.
Birdie, rest a little longer,
Till the little wings are stronger.
So she rests a little longer,
Then she flies away.
What does little baby say,
In her bed at peep of day?
Baby says, like little birdie,
Let me rise and fly away.
Baby, sleep a little longer,
Till the little limbs are stronger.
If she sleeps a little longer,
Baby too shall fly away.
Windflowers
Windflowers, windflowers
My father told me
Not to go near them
He said he feared them always
And he told me that
They carried him away
Windflowers
Beartiful windflowers
I couldn’ t wait to touch them
To smell them I held them closely
And now I cannot break away
Their sweet bouquet disappears
Like the vapor in the desert
So take a warning, son
Windflowers
Ancient windflowers
Their beauty capture every young dreamer
Who lingers near them
But ancient windflowers
I love you
The Loneliness of Personal Growth
We’ re like the cream. When the cream rises to the top, it separates itself from the milk. Perhaps that is what the New Age Movement is really all about. We find ourselves lonely at the top. Yes, it is.
It is no different with political enlightenment, spiritual enlightenment, or even becoming enlightened about relating to each other. The more mentally healthy you become, the more spiritual, the more balanced, the wealthier, the more global you become... the more alone you may feel.
Often, we find ourselves unable to find those other rare individuals who are choosing the same path as ours. The path of sloppy and lazy is full of other people to meet and talk to. The path of whiners is full. The path of being safe, generic, and boring is so crowded you almost cannot even move forward. Isn’ t that why you left that path? You had a need to move forward, a need for some elbowroom, a need to spread your arms wide, a need to be seen as special, unique, different. The masses may admire you, but they are not going to be able to really relate to you. You will be alone much of the time.
Do not be afraid of the loneliness of enlightenment. Do not force others to agree with you. Simply give your heart and know that you are growing and that they are free to grow or not. It is the nature of the game. We are all free to choose our paths.
A Lesson of Life
“Everything happens for the best,” my mother said whenever I faced disappointment. “If you can carry on, one day something good will happen. And you’ ll realize that it wouldn’ t have happened if not for that previous disappointment.”
Mother was right, as I discovered after graduating from college in 1932. I had decided to try for a job in radio, then work my way up to sports announcer. I hitchhiked to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station-and got turned down every time.
In one studio, a kind lady told me that big stations couldn’ t risk hiring inexperienced person. “Go out in the sticks and find a small station that’ ll give you a chance.” she said.
I thumbed home to Dixon, Illinois. While there was no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon, my father said Montgomery Ward had opened a store and wanted a local athlete to manage its sports department. Since Dixon was where I had played high school football,I applied. The job sounded just right for me. But I wasn’ t hired.
My disappointment must have shown. “Everything happens for the best.” Mom reminded me. Dad offered me the car to job hunt. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The program director, a wonderful Scotsman named Peter MacArthur, told me they had already hired an announcer.
As I left his office, my frustration boiled over. I asked a1oud, “How can a fellow get to be a sports announcer if he can’ t get a job in a radio station?”
I was waiting for the elevator when I heard MacArthur calling, “What was that you said about sports? Do you know anything about football?” Then he stood me before a microphone and asked me to broadcast an imaginary game.
On my way home, as I have many times since, I thought of my mother’ s words: “If you carry on, one day something good will happen. Something wouldn’ t have happened if not for that previous disappointment.” I often wonder what direction my life might have taken if I’ d gotten the job at Montgomery Ward.
The Road of Life
The lives of most men are determined by their environment.
They accept the circumstances amid which fate has thrown them not only resignation but even with good will. They are like streetcars running contentedly on their rails and they despise the sprightly flitter that dashes in and out of the traffic and speeds so jauntily across the open country. I respect them; they are good citizens, good husbands, and good fathers, and of course somebody has to pay the taxes; but I do not find them exciting. I am fascinated by the men, few enough in all conscience, who take life in their own hands and seem to mould it into their own liking. It may be that we have no such thing as free will, but at all events, we have the illusion of it.
At a cross-road it does seem to us that we might go either to the right or to the left and, the choice once made, it is difficult to see that the whole course of the world’ s history obliged us to take the turning we did.
Butterfly Insights
A marvelous lesson appeared for me just now as I was exiting through the garage.
As I opened the garage door, I startled a large moth, which, upon spreading its wings, displayed a bright red “tail” hidden by the motley brown wings, more a “butterfly” than a moth.
It flew immediately to its perceived escape, the circle-topped window where it frantically tried to exit thru the invisible wall of closed glass.
I raised the third-car garage door in hopes of aiding its escape. That caused it to fly higher and higher and become entangled in a spider web. Fearful that it would remain entangled in the web, I selected a long-handled broom to assist him escaping the tangled threads.
At this, he returned to furiously pumping his wings and banging into the glass, which was, in his perspective, the pathway of escape, but remained his cage.
By simply turning his focus to one side, he would have easily exited his prison. Rather, due to his intent on one direction, he remained confined, captive.
The Brave Breath
One midnight, a little girl woke up to pass water. She by herself got up and down her bed, walked to the bedroom door and opened it. She looked outside and walked back, for it was so dark in the hall that she feared.
Her mother said, “Don’ t be afraid, honey. Take courage.”
“What’ s courage?” she asked, running to her mother’ s bed.
“Courage is the brave breath.” her mother answered.
“Mum, do you have courage?”
“Certainly.”
The girl held out her little hands, saying, “Mum, blow some of your breath of courage to me.”
After her mother blew out two mouthfuls of breath into her little cold palms, the little girl clenched her fists nervously, afraid that the “breath of courage” would run away. Then with her fists clenched, she strode out of the bedroom toward the bathroom with nothing to fear.
Her mother said to herself, “It will be nice if someone can blow some kind of ‘breath’ to me, which I can grip in my hands too when I feel frightened, lost or depressed.”
In fact, on most occasions, what we are frightened of is nothing but the fear that we fabricate. Who we should defeat is nobody but ourselves.

The Road Not Taken
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same.
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I...
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Never Sink Into Blue Days
Everybody has blue days. These are miserable days when you feel lousy, grumpy, lonely, and utterly exhausted.
Days when you feel small and insignificant, when everything seems just out of reach. You can’ t rise to the occasion. Just getting started seems impossible.
On blue days you can become paranoid that everyone is out to get you. This is not always such a bad thing. You feel frustrated and anxious, which can induce a nail-biting frenzy that can escalate into a triple-chocolate-mud-cake-eating frenzy in a blink of an eye!
On blue days you feel like you’ re floating in an ocean of sadness. You’ re about to burst into tears at any moment and you don’ t even know why. Ultimately, you feel like you’ re wandering through life without purpose. You’ re not sure how much longer you can hang on, and you feel like shouting, “Will someone please shout me!”
It doesn’ t take much to bring on a blue day. You might just wake up not feeling or looking your best, but finding some new wrinkles, putting on a little weight, or getting a huge pimple on your nose. You could forget your date’ s name or have an embarrassing photograph published. You might get dumped, divorced, or fired, make a fool of yourself in public, be afflicted with a demeaning nickname, or just have a plain old bad-hair day.
Maybe work is a pain in the butt. You’ re under major pressure to fill someone else’ s shoes, your boss is picking on you, and everyone in the office is driving you crazy. You might have a splitting headache, or a slipped dish, or bad breath, a toothache, chronic gas, dry lips, or a nasty ingrown toenail.
Whatever the reason, you’ re convinced that someone up there doesn’ t like you. Oh what to do, what to do? Well, if you’ re like most people, you’ ll hide behind a flimsy belief that everything will sort itself out. Then you’ ll spend the rest of your life looking over your shoulder, waiting for everything to go wrong all over again. All the while becoming crusty and cynical or a pathetic, sniveling victim. Until you get so depressed that you lie down and beg the earth to swallow you up or, even worse, become addicted to Billy Joel songs.
This is crazy, because you’ re only young once and you’ re never old twice.
Six Inches’ Fear
A man walking in the night slipped from a rock. Afraid that he would fall down thousands of feet, because he knew that place was a very deep valley, he took hold of a branch that was hanging over the rock. In the night all he could see was a bottomless abyss. He shouted, his own shout reflected back-there was nobody to hear.
You can imagine that man and his whole night of scare. Every moment there was death, his hands were becoming cold, he was losing his grip... and as the sun came out he looked down and he laughed. There was no abyss. Just six inches down there was a rock. He could have rested the whole night, slept well-the rock was big enough-but the whole night was a nightmare.
Fear is only six inches deep. Now it is up to you whether you want to go on cling to the branch and turn your life into a nightmare, or whether you would love to leave the branch and stand on your feet.
Riders on the Earth Together
Each moment in history is a fleeting time, precious and unique. But some stand out as moments of beginning, in which courses are set that shape decades or centuries. This can be such a moment.
Forces now are converging that make possible, for the first time, the hope that many of man’ s deepest wishes can at last be realized...
As the Apollo astronauts flew over the moon’ s gray surface on Christmas Eve, they spoke to us of the beauty of earth-and in that voice so clear across the lunar distance, we heard them invoke God’ s blessing on its goodness.
In that moment, their view from the moon moved poet Archibald MacLeish to write: “To see the earth as it truly is, small and blue and beautiful in that eternal silence where it floats, is to see ourselves as riders on the earth together, brothers on that bright loveliness in the eternal cold-brothers who know now they are truly brothers.”...
Our destiny offers, not the cup of despair, but the chalice of opportunity. So let us seize it, not in fear, but in gladness-and, “Riders on the earth together”, let us go forward, firm in our faith, steadfast in our purpose, cautious of the dangers; but sustained by our confidence in the will of God and the promise of man.
Setting Your Heart Free
In the spring of life,
In the flower of youth,
Everything is bright and new.
In the summer of life,
Time of growth and change,
Each day brings new dreams to pursue.
In the autumn of life,
There’ s a settling down-
Contentment and sureness in what we do.
In the winter of life,
Comes peace and wisdom,
Time to relax and reminisce, too...
But with the passing of these seasons,
Life is still not done, not through,
For there is yet another season.
When each spirit is renewed.
And it is in this calm fifth season,
In this hopeful second spring,
A time of cleansing and rebirth,
A time of new awakening;
Each person’ s life will come full circle,
Even as the seasons do;
To start another, different life,
Much better than the one we knew.
