[18]63年11月19日,林肯在宾夕法尼亚州葛底斯堡出席为内战中捐躯的将士建造的国家公墓的揭幕礼,随后发表了这篇不到3分钟的演讲。

演讲向那些为建立平等自由的联邦而牺牲的士兵们致敬,阐述了“民有、民治、民享”这个民主政治理念。

演讲典雅肃穆,致敬逝者的同时勉励生者。文篇简短,但“我们”一词多有出现,传达了团结凝聚之意。

Four score and seven years ago our fathers broughtforth [1] on this continent, a new nation, conceived [2] in Liberty, and dedicated [3] to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure [4] . We are met on a great battle-fi eld of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion [5] of that fi eld, as a fi nal restin place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fi tting and proper that we should do this

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate—we can not consecrate [6] —we can not hallow [7] —this ground. The brave men, living and dead who struggled here, have consecrated it,far above our poor power to add or detract [8] . The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to behere dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that fromthese honored dead we take increased devotion to that causefor which they gave the last full measure of devotion— that wehere highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people,shall not perish from the earth .
