Day 1

实战演练

Whether the languages of the ancient American peoples were used for expressing abstract universal concepts can be clearly answered in the case of Nahuatl. Nahuatl, like Greek and German, is a language that allows the formation of extensive compounds. By the combination of radicals or semantic elements, single compound words can express complex conceptual relations, often of an abstract universal character.

The tlamatinime (those who know) were able to use this rich stock of abstract terms to express the nuances of their thought. They also availed themselves of other forms of expression with metaphorical meaning, some probably original, some derived from Toltec coinages. Of these forms, the most characteristic in Nahuatl is the juxtaposition of two words that, because they are synonyms, associated terms, or even contraries, complement each other to evoke one single idea. Used metaphorically, the juxtaposed terms connote specific or essential traits of the being they refer to, introducing a mode of poetry as an almost habitual form of expression.

——GRE OG 2nd Edition, Practice Test 1, Verbal Reasoning, Section 3

Select the sentence in the passage in which the author introduces a specific Nahuatl mode of expression that is not identified as being shared with certain European languages.

答案:

Of these forms, the most characteristic in Nahuatl is the juxtaposition of two words that, because they are synonyms, associated terms, or even contraries, complement each other to evoke one single idea.

答案解析

题目要求选出“作者在哪一句话中介绍了一种具体的Nahuatl表达方式,这种表达方式不同于其他欧洲语言”。“不同于其他欧洲语言”也就是说是Nahuatl特有的特征,根据这个意思不难选出“Of these forms, the most characteristic in Nahuatl is the juxtaposition of two words that, because they are synonyms, associated terms, or even contraries, complement each other to evoke one single idea”这个句子,“most characteristic”(最典型的)即表示这种方式的与众不同,而前面“the juxtaposition of two words”(两个单词的并置)即是“Nahuatl”的表达方式的具体例子,所以这个句子符合题目要求。

英文重现

Of these forms, the most characteristic in Nahuatl is the juxtaposition of two words that, because they are synonyms, associated terms, or even contraries, complement each other to evoke one single idea.

解析

1. 本句是一个完全倒装句。与普通陈述句语序——主语在前谓语在后不同,完全倒装句是谓语在前,主语在后。本句的主语是“the juxtaposition of two words”,谓语动词是“is”,形容词性结构“the most characteristic in Nahuatl”是表语,正常的语序表达为“the juxtaposition of two words is the most characteristic in Nahuatl”。

注:“形容词 + be + 主语”是一种典型的完全倒装结构,用于强调形容词表语,或用于主语的修饰成分很长的情况。本句主语因有定语从句修饰,所以比较长。

2. “that, because they are synonyms, associated terms, or even contraries, complement each other to evoke one single idea”是“that”引导的定语从句,修饰前面的名词“two words”;“complement”是定语从句的谓语动词;“because they are synonyms, associated terms, or even contraries”是插入到定语从句中的原因状语从句。把语序调整还原,就容易理解了:“that complement each other to evoke one single idea, because they are synonyms, associated terms, or even contraries”(“they”指代“two words”)。

3. “associate”常作动词,构成词组“associate A with B”,意思是将A和B联系起来,如:

People usually associate Whisky with Scotland.

MAgcp//NWWTZVR46V88CArBBdMDwWj0UHrVrWdQeLVCd5hfN6CL0gp1XUfEDNHeD
