“It was very good of aunt Rose to give me such a pretty doll,” said Dora. “But I do wish she had given me something else. I have so many dolls.”
Her cousin Amy did not speak for a time. Then she said, “Dora, I heard a sad story the other day. Would you like to hear it?”
“What was it? Please tell me,” said Dora.
“It was about a little girl named Kate. She is ill at the hospital and will have to stay in bed for a long time.”
“I HAD SUCH A BEAUTIFUL DREAM.”
“Her mother is a poor woman who has three little children to take care of.”
“One morning Kate said to the nurse, ‘Oh, I had such a beautiful dream last night! I thought I was sick as I am now. I was so tired, for I had nothing to play with.’”
“‘All at once I heard a little noise at my side. I looked around, and there on the bed was a beautiful doll.’”
“‘She had real hair, and her eyes could open and shut. She had on a fine dress. She even had little shoes on her feet.’”
“‘Oh, I can see her now if I just shut my eyes! So it is almost as good as if I really had her, isn’t it?’” “The poor child had never had a doll in all her life.”

“Poor little Kate!” said Dora. “And I am cross because I have too many dolls. Amy, may I not take one of my dolls to Kate?”
“Yes, Dora. I am sure your mother will be glad to have you do that. One of your old dolls will make little Kate very happy.”
“I think it wouldn’t be very kind to give her one of my old ones,” said Dora. “I should like to give her a pretty new one. Don’t you think this doll looks like the one Kate dreamed about?”
She held up her beautiful new doll.
“If you wish, I will go with you to the hospital,” said Amy. “We will take the doll to little Kate.”
Soon the two girls were in the children’s hospital. As they drew near Kate’s bed, the nurse made a sign for them not to speak. The child was asleep.
“Now we can make her dream come true,” said Dora.
She crept to Kate’s bed and put the doll down. Then she waited for Kate to wake up.
III
Three or four children in beds near by were watching Dora. Their pale little faces lighted up with smiles.
KATE PUT OUT HER HAND TO TOUCH THE DOLL.
At last Kate slowly opened her eyes and saw the doll.
She lay quite still at first, as if she thought it was only a dream.
After a while she put out her hand to touch the doll to see if it were real. Then with a cry of joy she drew it to her.
“Oh, it is a real true doll!” she cried. “It is like the one I saw in my dream, but prettier. Just look at her, nurse! See her curls and her little shoes!
“What good times we can all have with her! O nurse, do take her over to little Mary just a minute. Poor Mary can’t turn around to see her.”
Dora had never thought before how much pleasure she could give others by sharing her pretty thing with them.
She did not mean to be selfish. Now she was sorry to think how little she had ever done for others.
Her first visit to the hospital was not the last, you may be sure. Many of Dora’s toys and books were taken there, and brought joy to the poor sick children.

“罗丝阿姨真好，给了我一个可爱的娃娃，”朵拉说，“可我本来希望她会给我点别的什么。我的洋娃娃太多了。”
她的表姐艾米听到后沉默了一会儿，然后说：“朵拉，前几天我听了一个悲伤的故事。你也想听一听吗？”
“什么故事？请给我说说吧。”朵拉说。
“有个小女孩叫凯蒂，她生病了，住在医院里，而且得在床上躺好长一段时间。”
“她妈妈很穷，而且有三个孩子要照顾。”
“一天早上，凯蒂对护士说：‘我昨天晚上做了一个很美的梦！在梦里我也病了，而且很累，又没什么可以玩的。’”
“‘突然我听到身边有个声音，我一看，床上竟然有个漂亮的娃娃。’”
“‘她的头发像真的一样，眼睛可以打开闭上。她穿着一条优雅的裙子，脚上还有一双小鞋。’”
“‘我只要一闭上眼就能看到她！这跟我真的有个娃娃差不多，是不是？’”
“可怜的小姑娘从来也没有过一个属于自己的娃娃。”

“可怜的凯蒂！”朵拉说，“我居然为娃娃太多感到不高兴。艾米，我能送一个娃娃给凯蒂吗？”
“当然可以，朵拉。我想妈妈看到你这么做一定会很高兴的。只要有一个旧娃娃，小凯蒂就会很幸福。”
“送给她一个旧娃娃是挺不错的，”朵拉说，“可我觉得一个可爱的新娃娃更好。你看这个像不像凯蒂梦到的那个？”
她拿起一个漂亮的新娃娃。
“只要你愿意，我可以跟你一起去医院。”艾米说，“我们去把娃娃送给小凯蒂吧。”
不久，两个女孩就来到了儿童医院。还没到凯蒂的病床边，她们就看到护士做了个手势让她们别说话，因为小姑娘正睡觉呢。
“现在我们能让她美梦成真啦。”朵拉说。
她爬到凯蒂床上，把娃娃放下，然后就坐着等凯蒂醒来。

旁边三四张病床上的孩子都看着朵拉，他们苍白的笑脸上浮出了笑容。
凯蒂终于慢慢睁开眼，看到了娃娃。
她先是躺在那里一动不动，仿佛自己还在做梦。
过了一会，她伸出手碰了娃娃一下，发现竟然是真的，于是快乐地叫了一声，把娃娃拿了起来。
“啊，这真的是个娃娃！就和我梦里见到的一样，不，还要更漂亮。”她喊着，“看看她，护士小姐！看看她的卷发和小鞋子！”
“我们一定会玩得很高兴的！护士小姐，请把她拿去给小玛丽看一看。可怜的玛丽不能转头，看不到她。”
朵拉以前从来不知道，和别人分享自己可爱的玩具竟然是这么幸福的事。
她并不是个自私的人，不过她现在还是后悔以前太少为别人着想了。
这是朵拉第一次来医院，但绝不是最后一次。她送来很多玩具和书，给生病的穷孩子带来了很多快乐的时光。
