斐洛(Philo)通常又被人们称为犹太人斐洛(Philo the Jew)或亚历山大的斐洛(Philo of Alexandria)。这座城市位于埃及尼罗河畔，在希腊化时期是流散的犹太人的主要居住地之一。
关于斐洛的生平，我们知之甚少。他出身于亚历山大一个富裕而又有影响力的家庭。他的兄弟亚历山大是罗马帝国的一个高级税务官。他的外甥于公元四十六年担任犹大地区的行政长官。公元三十九年或四十年，斐洛参加了一个由亚里山大的犹太人派遣的使团，去向罗马皇帝卡利古拉(Caligula)申诉他们遭受的迫害。晚些时候，斐洛在著作中记述那次使命的时候称自己为老人。据此，人们推测他大约出生于公元前二十年。他去世的年代也不确定，大约是公元后五十年。斐洛可以说是耶稣和保罗的同时代人，但没有任何材料表明斐洛知道他们的生活和工作。
斐洛的著述主要围绕三方面的内容：一、历史著作；二、对旧约经典的诠释；三、神学著作。他有很多著作传世，大部分是希腊文的，也有少量著作仅存亚兰文本。现有英文译本有以下两种：
一、Philo，12 vols，Translated by F.H.Colson etc.，The Loeb Classical Library，Reprint 1971.这个集子的前十卷收录了斐洛的全部希腊文著作，并附英译文，后两卷增补了斐洛的那些仅有亚兰文本的著作。
二、The Works of Philo，Translated by C.D.Yonge，Hendrickson Publishers，Inc.，Massachusetts，1993.这个英文集子最初以四卷本的形式于一八五四至一八五五年出版(The Works of Philo Judaeus，the contemporary of Josephus，translated from the Greek，London：Henry G.Bohn)。
