总体来说，英语专业四级写作考核的主要是学生的书面表达能力，而不是其知识范围和思想深度，因此考试的命题可根据考生的知识结构、年龄特点和文化历史背景而确定。

一般而言，便条写作提供的都是校园生活情景，要求考生能够表达告示、祝贺、安慰、道歉、询问、婉拒、邀请等，其涉及的话题一般为考生日常生活中遇到的常见问题，不会涉及知识面过广、专业性太强的内容。
例如：Your friend,Jane,has failed in the final exam,and is feeling very unhappy about it.Write a note to comfort her and give her some encouragement.（2004）
总之，写作部分是英语专业四级考试中唯一的主观性试题，它考核的是学生的语言综合运用能力，而2004年版《高校英语专业四级考试大纲》又增强了该部分的分值，可见，专四写作测试部分已经越来越注重考查考生驾驭语言的能力。
