租房对于大多数在外打拼的人来说是个最熟悉也最令人头疼的话题。租房需要注意什么呢？首先要根据自己的工作地点选择房子，确认房屋是否安全，以及周围配套设施是否完善。

Jack：I see. If the rent is reasonable, I'd like to live here for about three years.
Tom：The rent is$465 per month and the security rent is two months rent.
Jack：Sounds a good bargain.
Tom：You can put that in your pipe and smoke it.
Jack：Next Saturday at the earliest.

租房要先在报纸上寻找To lease/To let（招租出让）的广告，接下来要做的就是打电话给leasing agent（租屋中介）或是landlord/landlady（房东）确认一下是否有房子要出租，并询问相关的信息。和对方交流时，诸如“Do you have any apartments for rent right now?”“Do you have any apartments available right now?”或是“Do you still have a vacancy?（还有空的公寓吗？）”这样的句子都是不错的讲法。
如果对方的确有公寓要出租，那我们就可以紧接着问：“What kind of apartment do you have?（你们的公寓怎么样啊？）”。如果不巧房子刚刚lend out（租出去），你可以换别家试试。
美国的房子一般可分为下列几种：house是独栋的房子，通常有好几个房间；condominium（常简称condo），是一栋建筑物分属不同的住户，而且住户通常拥有房子的产权；townhouse则是几栋连在一起的房子，通常只有很小的院子，但房子本身都有二到三层楼。apartment一般是流动人口和单身者居住的地方，价格相对便宜，一般刚来美国的同学都是住apartment。美国的apartment通常是由专门的租赁公司经营管理，所以常常整个社区都是用来出租的。社区内一般规划有网球场、游泳池、健身房和洗衣房等设施。至于拥有一间house，则是很多外来移民的American dream（美国梦）。其实这个梦想并不难实现，毕竟在美国，买房子的钱只占大部分人收入的一小部分，比国内便宜多了。
