Lai Guogui:I Am Not a Superman but aSpider Man

赖国贵,浙江春风动力股份有限公司董事长。高中毕业后,在一位摩托车生产企业工程师的建议下,他和父亲开始生产摩托车配件。通过艰苦创业,不断捕捉市场信息,目前公司资产已达11亿多元。

Lai Guogui is thechairman of CFMOTO. After graduating from high school,at the suggestion of amotorcycle engineer,he and his father started producing motorcycleaccessories. Through his hard work and sharp sense of market change,thecompany assets reached 1.1 billion RMB.

问: 赖总,您好!我是浙江大学宁波理工学院的学生,参与了“用声音叙事”暑期实践,现在想对您进行一个简单的采访,可以开始了吗?

答: 嗯,好的。

问: 您说过,“做企业跟唐僧取经一样”。请问,为什么会这样比喻呢?

答: 做企业一路过来,受到的诱惑有很多,就像唐僧一路取经一样。但是不管唐僧在路上受到多大的诱惑,他最大的目标就是去取经。“春风”也一样,不管市场上其他企业怎么做,我们首先专注水冷,其次我们专注动力运动产品。虽然一路上的诱惑也很多,但是我们企业始终沿着这一条线走。

问: 那您可以谈谈您的用人之道吗?

答: 谈到用人之道,作为企业老板,他没有必要成为一个超人,而应成为一个蜘蛛人。他可以结一张网,把所有的各路人才吸引到他的团队中来。

问: 您这个比喻真的十分形象。那对企业家精神,您又是怎样的理解呢?

答: 专一与坚持是企业家精神必不可少的组成部分,当然其中也有冒险精神。

问: 既然提到冒险精神,您是否可以举个例子呢?

答: 就像2008年全球金融危机,在国外,我们的产品就像大玩具,主要是休闲娱乐用的,所以从某种意义上来说,它不像水、面包、牛奶,不是一种生活必需品。那个时候,2009年的销售额相对于2008年就降低了50%,但是,我们还是在2008年就决定开发800cc这种大排量的发动机。我们看准了这个方向,短期来说,它是一种风险,因为这个市场层面的需求下降得很厉害。在这种情况下,我们仍坚持将发动机开发出来了,这也是一种所谓的企业家的冒险精神。对现在的市场来说,它是个聪明之举,800cc的车子在营销比例中占了50% 之多。

问: 这样的冒险精神,对一个企业家来说,还真的十分重要。那您从创办企业起这一路走来,有什么人对您产生过比较大的影响呢?

答: 我的父亲对我影响很大,他是浙江省的劳动模范,他的勤奋努力感染了我。

问: 那您觉得自己的哪一种品质对企业的成功起到过很大的作用呢?

答: 我本身学历并不高,但是我对新事物很感兴趣。这也就奠定了我们企业“和、信、新”理念中的“新”。“新”就是创新,创新当然也是企业家的灵魂。

问: 那您后来为什么会选择在杭州开办您的企业呢?

答: 大家也知道,“上有天堂,下有苏杭”,从物流层面来说,从杭州到宁波港、到上海港就两个小时的车程,具备方便性、经济性、便捷性的优势。杭州这个地方本身也更能够吸引尖端的人才长期待在这里。

问: 那您觉得中国的传统文化对开拓海外市场有什么影响吗?

答: 儒家之道讲究诚信,国外也很讲究诚信。作为一个企业来说,诚信取决了你的海外市场和国内市场能否取得成功。但是单就产品而言,我觉得跟中国所谓的传统文化没有必然的联系。我们很多产品就是利用了自己的成本优势、资源优势、技术优势来获得成功。所谓的诚信,契合了我们企业理念“和、信、新”中的“信”。

问: 对企业家的社会责任感,您是如何理解的呢?

答: 任何企业家,做到一定程度以后,都应担负起他的社会责任。我们参加过消防公益活动,也包括无偿捐赠警用摩托车。另外,对于员工,年底放假,包车送员工回家。住宿也有补贴,公司还有专门的宿舍楼,食堂二楼还有员工活动中心。从小处看,这些是对员工的关爱,可以让员工体会到企业带给他们的关爱。往大处说,这些也是社会责任。

问: 那您觉得国外市场和国内市场最大的区别是什么呢?

答: 在对质量和服务的追求方面,双方都还有一定的差距,因为国外市场已经有相当健全的法律法规,而国内市场仍需要进一步提高。

问: 最后想问您,对于我们英语专业的学生,您对我们将来的就业有什么建议?

答: 语言只是一门工具而已,是一种技能。全球化时代,我们企业创收很大一块来自海外市场,首先要跟客户打交道。大学里英语分得很细,那是因为对话交流的涉及面不同,英语只是沟通的工具而已,还要有别的方面的知识来扩充,比如做外贸,要知道外贸的流程。根据未来工作性质的不同,在语言的基础上涉及不同的专业,你不需要成为一名工程师,但基础的知识要知道。

Q: Hello,Mr. Lai!I am a student from NingboInstitute of Technology,Zhejiang University. I am taking part in a summerpractice program named “Beyond the Voices”,and now I’d like to have a shortinterview with you. Shall we start now?

A: Yes,of course.

Q: You once said,“Doing business islike Master Tang’s journey to the West.” Could you tell me how you came up withthis analogy?

A: During business,there will be a lot oftemptation,just as much as the journey of Master Tang. But no matter to whathe is lured,his final target is to fetch the scriptures. No matter what othercompanies do in the market,the first thing we should do is to focus,and thesecond is our products. Although there are a lot of temptations,our companygoes on the straight and narrow all the time.

Q: How about your method of hiring?

A: Speaking ofthat,as a boss of the company,one does not need to be a Superman but a SpiderMan. So he can weave a web to attract all kinds of talented people to his team.

Q: That sounds interesting. And aboutthe entrepreneurial spirit,would you please share your opinions?

A: Focus and persistence arenecessary parts of the entrepreneurial spirit,and of course there is also theadventurous spirit.

Q: Could you give an example of yourown adventurous spirit?

A: During the 2008 global financialcrisis,in foreign countries,our products were like toys for entertainment. Soin a sense,they were not water,not bread,not milk—they were not life necessities. At that time,the sales for 2009were 50% lower than that of 2008. But we still made a decision in 2008 todevelop a type of 800 cc,large capacity engines. We set this as our direction.In short,it was a risk because the demand of the market was weak. In thissituation,we still insisted on developing the new engine,which is an exampleof the adventurous spirit of entrepreneurs. It was a smart move for the market.Now the sales of 800 cc cars take up more than 50% of the marketing rate.

Q: So I can see that adventurousspirit is truly important for entrepreneurs. And who do you think was importantfor you when you began your business?

A: I think it is my father whoinfluenced me a lot. He is a model worker of Zhejiang Province,and hisdiligence inspires me.

Q: Which of your qualities do youthink has an important influence on your success?

A: I haven’t received high education,but I havegreat interests in new things,which helps to establish our company’s ideas of“harmony,credibility and innovation”. And “innovation” is also important forthe spirit of entrepreneurs.

Q: Why did you choose to start yourbusiness in Hangzhou?

A: As we all know,“Up in heaven,there is a paradise,down on earth,there are Suzhou and Hangzhou.” In terms oflogistics,the distance from Ningbo Port to Shanghai Port is two hours long bycar. It is convenient,economical,and handy. Meanwhile,Hangzhou itselfattracts talented people.

Q: What’s your opinion about theinfluence that Chinese traditional culture has on expanding overseasmarkets?

A: The integrityof Confucianism is also respected abroad. As a company,credibility decideswhether your overseas and domestic markets will be successful. If we onlyconsider product,it does not necessarily have to do with traditional Chineseculture. Many of our products have the advantage of cost,resources,andtechnology. The integrity is just the “credibility” in our company’s ideas“harmony,credibility and innovation”.

Q: How do you understand the socialresponsibility of entrepreneurs?

A: Everyentrepreneur should have his social responsibility. We have sponsored firefighting and donated police motorcycles. What’s more,for the welfare ofemployees,during the holidays at the end of the year,we charter cars to takestaff home. We provide subsidy for boarding,as well as dormitory buildings,canteen and an activity center for staff. In a narrow sense,the care that ourcompany gives to our staff makes them feel loved. In a broad sense,it is alsoa part of social responsibility.

Q: What do youthink is the biggest difference between overseas and domestic markets?

A: I think it is the pursuit of thequality of products and service. There is actually an obvious distance.Overseas markets have mature and healthy legal systems while domestic marketsstill need to work hard to improve on that.

Q: Last but not the least,could youplease give us English majors some advice for our future careers?

A: As we all know,language is just atool and skill. In the age of globalization,for companies overseas markets arevery important. First,you need to communicate with your clients. At college,there are many kinds of English courses because it involves all aspects ofcommunication. But English is your tool of communication. Given thecircumstances of globalization,you need to acquire other knowledge. Forexample,you have to know the procedures of export trade. According to the job,you will get in touch with different kinds of knowledge,based on the languageyou know. You don’t have to become an engineer,but you have to acquire somebasic knowledge.

企业背景: 浙江春风动力股份有限公司成立于1989年,坐落于长江三角洲中心城市杭州。从刚开始的摩托车配件生产者,到现在的动力娱乐产品制造业中具有影响力的中国品牌,经过20年的发展,“春风”现成为一家专业从事水冷发动机及摩托车、全地形车(ATV)、轻型多功能车(UTV)等产品的研发、制造和销售的大型股份制企业。无论是2008年全球金融危机,还是面向海外市场所受的压力,这一路的磨炼,铸就了“春风”今日的辉煌。

企业文化,是企业的灵魂。创办企业,就像是驾驶着船只扬帆远航,而企业文化,就是船上唯一的指南针。是它,明确了航行的方向;是它,指引企业走向成功的彼岸。“和谐、诚信、创新”,是“春风”集团企业文化的核心,也铸就了今天辉煌的“春风动力”。

和谐

打造团结协作、管理通畅、高效率的员工团队,建设和谐企业。和谐,是企业凝聚力的体现。当我第一次踏入企业大门,就看到了整齐的宿舍楼与食堂。我第一印象是这里如同大学校园,这是企业在硬件上给员工所营造的和谐氛围。在跟赖总的交谈中,得知公司还有员工活动中心,配有各种运动设备,员工可以在休闲间隙进行身心放松和体育锻炼。这样的环境,可以让员工忘却工作时的紧张疲劳,从而享受运动带来的放松与舒适。劳逸结合,是一种和谐,也更能够提高工作效率。更令我惊讶的是,“春风动力”还拥有自己的期刊,版面多,内容丰富。我最喜欢的是“春风文苑”,里面刊登的是员工自己投稿的文章。在这里,作者抒发了对工作的热情与对未来的希望;在这里,字里行间彰显的是企业员工的精神风貌。和谐,是企业战斗力的体现。就是这样的团队,使企业像滚雪球一样越做越大,公司总资产从最初的15万元飙升到今天的11亿多元。和谐就像是幸运之神,创造了最为宝贵的精神财富,而对企业来说,随之也带来了最可观的业绩和利润。

诚信

诚信,作为中国传统文化的一部分,是企业在贸易往来上的精神支柱。在赖总看来,儒家之道里面的诚信,在国外也很讲究。对一个企业来说,诚信决定了其能否在国内外市场站稳脚跟。诚实守信,认真务实,以信守承诺的态度打造企业一流品牌。这是“春风动力”对企业文化中“诚信”的诠释和所追求的目标。在参观车间的时候,我发现每个岗位上都是身穿统一工作服的员工。他们仔细、认真地完成手上的工作,然后交给下一个流程的员工。这样一个个环节的接力,是责任的传递。正是员工们的团结、奋斗、努力,为企业的发展贡献出了各自的一份力量。不论是同事之间,还是生意伙伴之间,诚信就像是溪流,从四面八方涌入,最终注入企业文化的大海里。诚信,提供了长久合作的平台,也是企业本身素质的体现。

创新

“稳定、专业的研发团队确保公司有能力持续自主创新。”赖总说企业一路走来,自主创新发展模式是企业的核心竞争力,整个企业中技术人员占30%以上。目前,“春风动力”已成功研发出具有独立自主知识产权的12种车型和5大系列新型水冷发动机,其中国内第一款大排量街车650NK、第一款大排量全地形越野车X8、第一款自主研发1500cc艇用发动机等产品填补了国内技术空白。“春风”的创新目标就是:鼓励创新精神,发挥创新才能,建设可持续发展的高新技术企业。“靠科技吃饭,靠创新赚钱”,赖总的这句肺腑之言,在公司里深入人心,成为企业的行动指南。“春风动力”与其他企业相比的优势在于坚持投入资金于自主研发的项目中去。也是这种坚持,让“春风”走出中国,走向了世界。一个企业的自主创新能力,体现了企业的真正实力,体现了企业不断追求卓越品质的理想。

这次采访,也许只是简短的交谈,但是让我明白了一个成功企业的诞生,需要领导者用自己的智慧,将企业融为一个强大的集体,并且在重要领域发掘企业的潜能和特色,有自己追求的目标和奋斗的动力。而对于还是学生的我们,关键是要善于发现自己的闪光点,树立自己的理想和目标,并坚持走到最后!

“Harmony,Credibility,Innovation”—ShapingCFMOTO

Enterprise background: Founded in 1989,CFMOTO islocated in Hangzhou,a central city in the Yangtze River Delta. From a smallfactory producing motorcycle accessories to an influential brand of motor-poweredsport vehicles in China,two decades of development has turned the company intoa large professional joint-stock enterprise developing,producing,and sellingwater-cooled engines and motorcycles,ATVs and UTVs,and other vehicles. Despitethe 2008 global financial crisis or the pressure from expanding overseasmarkets,going through the tough times has ensured CFMOTO’s success.

Enterprise culture is the spiritof enterprise. Starting a business is like sailing a boat,and enterpriseculture is like the compass on the boat. It is the compass that gives a cleardirection for sailing. Enterprise culture guides the enterprise to reach theshore of success.

“Harmony”,“credibility”,and“innovation” are the core elements of the enterprise culture of CFMOTO that hasensured its success.

Harmony

Create a staff team with teamspirit,management,and great efficiency,and you have built a harmoniousenterprise. Harmony demonstrates the cohesiveness of the enterprise. What I sawwhen I first entered the gate of CFMOTO was the orderly dormitories andcanteens. I felt like I was walking on a college campus,and this representedthe harmonious environment that the enterprise had created for the staff.During the interview with Mr. Lai,I found out that there was a staff activitycenter with various kinds of exercise equipment where the staff could exerciseand relax. This environment enables the staff to release the feeling ofexhaustion from work and enjoy the comfort of exercising in their spare time.Alternating work with rest is a kind of harmony that improves the efficiency ofwork. What surprised me most was that CFMOTO has its own periodicals that arerich in content. My favorite page was “The Literary World of CFMOTO” where thestaff contributes their own articles. Here,the authors express theirenthusiasm for work and expectations for the future. Here,the mental attitudeof the staff is shown between the lines. Harmony demonstrates the fightingcapacity of the enterprise. It is such a team that makes the enterprise becomestronger and stronger,a kind of snowball effect as its total assets rose from150,000 yuan to over 1.1 billion yuan. Harmony is the good Lord who createsspiritual resources for the staff and brings the most significant achievementsand profits to the enterprise.

Credibility

Credibility is the spiritualanchor for the enterprise,a part of Chinese traditional culture. In Mr. Lai’sopinion,credibility is also important in foreign countries. Credibilitydecides whether the enterprise can stand its ground both in the domestic marketand overseas markets. To build a class brand with credibility and pragmatism isthe goal they pursue. Visiting the workshop,I found that each worker wasdressed in the uniform of their position. They were carefully doing the work athand and then passing it to the workers of the next step. What they had donestep by step was passing on responsibilities. It was their unity,strugglingand striving that contributed to the development of the enterprise. Thecredibility of workers in each department,no matter if they were colleagues orbusiness partners,came together like a river from all directions to flow intothe sea of enterprise culture. Credibility offered a platform for long-termcooperation and was the reflection of the quality of the enterprise.

Innovation

“The steady and professionalresearch and development team guarantees the ability of the enterprise tomaintain innovation.” Mr. Lai said that innovation was the core competitiveadvantage of the enterprise,and the number of technicians accounted for 30% ofthe total employees. At present,CFMOTO has developed twelve vehicle modelsthat are independent intellectual property. Some products of CFMOTO have filleda gap in China,such as the first high-emission streetcar 650 NK,the firsthigh-emission all-terrain vehicle X8,and the first self-developed 1500 ccyacht engine and so on. “Encouraging the spirit of innovation,developing theability to innovate,and building a high-tech enterprise of sustainabledevelopment are the innovation goals of CFMOTO. In words from the bottom of Mr.Lai’s heart,he says,“Survival by technology,profits from innovation.” Andthis remark has won support among the staff and become the call to action forthe enterprise. Compared with other enterprises,the superiority of CFMOTO wasthat it insisted on investing in the program of independent research anddevelopment. And it was perseverance that made CFMOTO succeed. Independentinnovation is the reflection of the real power of enterprise and the ideal forconstant pursuit of excellent quality.

Through this interview,though itwas short,I realized that to be a successful enterprise,the leader’s wisdomis essential to make the enterprise a strong team and to explore theproficiency and features in important areas of the enterprise. Meanwhile,it isalso vital to let the enterprise have the goal to pursue and power to develop.And as for college students,the key is to find the light on our own,set anideal and goal for ourselves and keep going.
