Amanda: Who is your favourite author?

Charlie: I’d have to say Hemingway — Ernest Hemingway. He's just a brilliant author. What do you think about him?

Amanda: I’m ashamed to say that I’ve never actually read anything by him.

Charlie: You could start with his fi rst novel The Sun Also Rises .

Amanda: What's that about?

Charlie: It's about a group of American and British expats who traveled from Paris to Pamplona to watch the running of the bulls and the bullfi ghts.

Amanda: Sounds interesting. What's his writing style like?

Charlie: It's quite light and easy to read.

Amanda: That appeals to me!

Charlie: Hemingway's writing style was quite unique at the time. He used simple sentences and language and only included words and ideas that were necessary to tell the story.

Amanda: Sounds like he would have made a really good editor.

Charlie: No doubt he would have with his ability to trim the ‘verbal' fat off his work.

Amanda: That's an appetizing image.

Charlie: Oh, sorry. I forgot you were eating. Anyway, it's only a metaphor.

Amanda: So, what other books would you recommend?

Charlie: For Whom the Bell Tolls is another amazing novel, set during the Spanish Civil War.

Amanda: I’m not really into books about war.

Charlie: OK, well The Old Man and the Sea is quite interesting too.

Amanda: What's that about?

Charlie: It's about an old fisherman who struggles with a large fish called a marlin.

Amanda: Either you're not really selling this well or it's not a very fascinating book.

Charlie: He actually won a Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for that one — and contributed to Hemingway's Nobel Prize in Literature as well.

Amanda: Sounds like I just need to read it to understand.

Charlie: A good writer could make an interesting story out of anything — even from the most mundane scenarios.

Amanda: He wrote some short stories too, didn't he?

Charlie: Of course — that's actually how he started, which is probably why he is so good at cutting out all the non-essential parts of the story.
