情景对话
Kerry: Wow, that looks like a rather weighty tome!
John: Yes, I’m carrying it so people think I’m clever. Is it working?
Kerry: What book is it?
John: War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy.
Kerry: OK, I’ve heard of that. Isn't it one of those books that everyone tries to read but then gives up on?
John: Yes, it does have a reputation for being a bit long but I’m determined to get through it. If I can make it through Ulysses by James Joyce I reckon I can get through this!
Kerry: You make it sound like so much fun!
John: Actually it's really good.
Kerry: What's it about?
John: It's about the events that surround the French invasion of Russia during the Napoleonic era and it deals with the invasion's impact on Russia's Tsarist society. They story is experienced via the perspective of five Russian aristocratic families. It was fi rst published in 1869 but the story took place from 1805 to 1825.
Kerry: Would you recommend it?
John: Well, it's an epic novel so it takes some dedication to read it and the form varies, the latter parts are more a philosophical discussion than a narrative, but I’d say it is a classic for a reason.
Kerry: How so?
John: Tolstoy spent a lot of time doing historical research and he incorporated this into the novel so it's a really good example of literary realism.
Kerry: Hmm, maybe I’ll give it a go some time. I’ve read a bit of Dostoyevsky before and I enjoyed it.
John: Actually, Dostoyevsky was a big fan of Tolstoy, he considered him to be the greatest of all living writers. Anton Chekhov was also a big fan.
Kerry: Well, that's quite an endorsement, I love Chekhov's plays. I think I’ll give it a go when I fi nish the book I’m reading at the moment.
John: Oh, what are you reading?
Kerry: I’m reading the dictionary at the moment. The plot is nonsensical but at least it explains every word as you go along!
John: Very funny.
