背景介绍
约翰·沃尔夫冈·冯·歌德（1749—1832),出生于德国的戏剧家、诗人、自然科学家、文艺理论家和政治人物，为魏玛的古典主义最著名的代表。歌德最著名的作品是长篇诗剧《浮士德》。浮士德博士不满足于研究学问，为了寻求真理，在魔鬼靡非斯特的引诱下，以自己的灵魂换取生命体验。他先后经历了书斋生活、爱情生活、政治生活、追求古典美和建功立业五个阶段。每一次尝试都以充满激情开始，以理想幻灭结束，没有哪段经历能让他感到生命完满不再有欠缺。最后，在魔鬼即将收去他的灵魂时，天使赶来挽救了浮士德的灵魂。
情景对话
Samantha: We've been studying some really interesting people in night school.
Greg: Oh, I didn't know you were going to night school. What are you studying?
Samantha: It's a course on literature focusing on the great works.
Greg: Oh, so Shakespeare and the like?
Samantha: Yeah, that kind of thing. We were looking at Goethe last night. We're going to be studying Faust .
Greg: I think I've heard of that. Is that the one where he sells his soul to the devil?
Samantha: Yes, that's right. I'd heard of the play but I didn't know that much about Goethe. I always thought he was just a poet.
Greg: But he was a playwright, too?
Samantha: He was more than that, he was into all sorts of things.
Greg: Like what?
Samantha: Well he was a real polymath. Alongside writing plays and poems he wrote novels, he painted, he wrote infl uential scientifi c books. He was quite an amazing man.
Greg: Sounds like he had his fi ngers in quite a few pies.
Samantha: He did, indeed. He was one of those fi gures that were on the cusp of real cultural change in Europe. Our lecturer was saying that his infl uence can be felt in a lot of works that followed him, people like Nietzsche, Hermann Hesse and even Charles Darwin.
Greg: That's very impressive.
Samantha: Isn't it? His infl uence is immense. He's credited with changing the rules of German poetry. Can you imagine writing something that changes the rules of poetry? His poetry has been put to music by people like Mahler, Mozart and Beethoven. It's an unbelievable legacy.
Greg: You don't really get people like that nowadays, do you?
Samantha: Maybe that's something for you to aim towards, Greg. If you stop watching crap on television perhaps you'd have more time to perfect your novels and poetry!
Greg: Yeah, and then I could get up earlier and start work on redefining science as we know it!
Samantha: That sounds like a plan to me. What do you think?
Greg: Well, I'd have to check the TV schedule first. I wouldn't want to miss anything good!
萨曼莎： 我们在夜校研究了一些非常有趣的人物。
