Bess was even afraid to eat her dinner.
She would sniff at it on this side and sniff at i on that side, until at last she would get so hungry. She would gulp down her dinner without chewing it at all.
贝丝甚至害怕吃东西。
她这边闻一下，那边嗅两下，直到最后她真的饿了，便狼吞虎咽地吃了起来，丝毫不加咀嚼。
Then Bess would be afraid because her tummy ached.
接下来，贝丝又害怕起来，她的胃开始痛了。
At night time Bess was afraid of a STRANGE BLACK CREATURE.
Sometimes IT was small and sometimes IT was large, but always IT would stay with Bess wherever she went, crawling on the floor and climbing up the stairs and down the stairs, and sometimes on the wall.
到了晚上，贝丝害怕一个奇怪的黑乎乎家伙。
有时它很小，有时又变得很大，无论贝丝走到哪里，它总是形影不离——趴在地上，爬到楼梯上，有时又挂在墙上。
One day when Bess was Outdoors, because she was afraid to go Indoors, she heard these sounds come from the garden next door:
一天，贝丝正在屋外玩儿，害怕进到屋里，她听到隔壁花园里传来一阵声响：
“MEOWWW!”
“QUACK-QUACK!”
“WOOOF-WOOOF!”
“喵－喵！”
“嘎－嘎！”
“呜－弗！”
Then up in the tree came
接着，树上跳上去
jumping a CAT!
一只猫！
