我们都知道，大部分家庭洗的衣服都是在阳台或在露天晒干的。有时候，一排排阳台上衣物、被子等五颜六色，也算是一道“靓丽”风景吧。但是在美国，这种“风景”极其罕见。为什么呢？
因为美国的房子一般分为公寓或独栋式房子。
普通公寓（apartment）里，有的城市规定不能在阳台窗外晾衣服。洗衣机在美国挺贵的，也很重。一般的公寓里是没有洗衣机的，他们一般都是用楼下的公用洗衣机。洗衣的时候，为了省钱，有的人把衣服，鞋袜，鞋垫什么都往里扔，全部一块洗。
独栋的房子（house）里，后院有地方可以晾衣服，但是美国人没有这习惯。在别墅或高级公寓（condo）里会有洗衣机和烘干机，当然懒的人，还是拿到洗衣店（laundry）干洗。美国人没有手洗的习惯，所以很少用香皂（soap）洗衣服，连超市也没洗衣香皂卖。
美国干洗服务是很普遍的。
