A peasant was once driving his wagon over a muddy road. His wheels were soon fast in the mire. He shouted at his horses, and then beat them, but they could not move the heavy load. Then the man called upon Hercules to help him out of his trouble. “Have you tried to help yourself?” asked Hercules. “Put your own shoulder to the wheel. Heaven helps those who help themselves.”
Ask your teacher to tell you about Hercules. He was very strong, and loved to do hard things.
If you can do hard things, too, you can copy the hard words in the story of “The Stone in the Road.” If you do that work well you will be like the miller’s son. Your work will lead you to find a treasure by and by.
