Chapter 6 His Majesty King Louis Xiii
这件事引起了很大的轰动。
This affair made a great noise。
德特雷维尔先生虽然当众训斥了他的火枪手，但私下里向他们道贺，他觉得还是得抓紧时间去赢得国王的支持，于是便立刻往卢浮宫赶去。
M。 de Treville scolded his musketeers in public and congratulated them in private； but as no time was to be lost in gaining the king，M。 de Treville made all haste to the Louvre。
可他到得还是太迟了，国王和红衣主教正在密谈，德特雷维尔先生被告知国王正处理事务，没有时间接见他。
But he was too late； the king was closeted with the cardinal，and M。 de Treville was informed that the king was busy and could not receive him。
到了晚上，德特雷维尔先生来到国王的牌桌旁。
In the evening M。 de Treville went to the king’ scard—table。
国王正赢着钱，由于他一向很贪婪，所以这会儿心情非常好，大老远地他就看到了德特雷维尔，
The king was winning，and as his Majesty was very avaricious，he was in an excellent humour； therefore，perceiving M。 de Treville at a distance，

Come here，captain， said he—come here，that I may scold you。
你知道吗，主教阁下刚来告你那几个火枪手的状，而且这件事让他情绪很激动，今晚他都病倒了。
Do you know that his Eminence has just made fresh complaints against your musketeers，and with so much emotion that his Eminence is indisposed this evening？
嗐，你的这些火枪手真是冒失鬼——真该把他们都吊死！
Why，these musketeers of yours are very devils—fellows to be hanged！
不，陛下，特雷维尔回答道，他一眼就看出了该如何扭转局面——不，陛下，正好相反，他们都是很棒的小伙子，温顺得像小羊羔一样，我敢担保，他们只有一个愿望，那就是拔剑出鞘，为陛下效劳。
No，sire， replied Treville，who saw at the first glance which way things would turn—no，sire； on the contrary，they are good creatures，as meek as lambs，and have but one desire，Ill be their warranty； and this is，that their swords may never leave their scabbards but in your Majesty’ sservice。

But what are they to do？

The guards of the cardinal are for ever seeking quarrels with them，and for the honour of the corps even the poor young men are obliged to defend themselves。

Would not one say he was speaking of a religious community？

Three of my best soldiers，whom your Majesty knows by name，and whose devotion you have more than once appreciated，and who have，I can assure the king，his service much at heart—three of my best soldiers，I say—Athos，Porthos，and Aramis—had made a party of pleasure with a young cadet from Gascony，whom I had introduced to them the same morning。
聚会是定在圣日耳曼，不过约定先在卡姆德绍修道院会合，谁知刚到那儿，就让德朱萨克、卡于萨克、比卡拉还有另外两个卫士给搅了，很明显，他们要不是要干什么违抗法令的勾当，怎么会一块去那儿呢。
The party was to take place at St。 Germain，I believe，and they had appointed to meet at the Carmes—Deschaux，when they were disturbed by De Jussac，Cahusac，Bicarat，and two other guards，who certainly did not go there in a body without some ill intention against the edicts。

Ah，ah！ you incline me to think so， said the king。

There is no doubt they went thither with the intention of fighting。

I do not accuse them，sire； but I leave your Majesty to judge what five armed men could possibly be going to do in such a retired spot as the environs of the Convent des Carmes。

You are right，Treville，you are right！

Yes，Treville，yes， said the king in a melancholy tone； and it is very sad，believe me，to see thus two parties in France，two heads to royalty。

But all this will come to an end，Treville，will come to an end。

You say，then，that the guards sought a quarrel with the musketeers？

Why，this is a victory！ cried the king，glowing with delight，a complete victory！

Four men，one of them wounded，and a youth，say you？

And Louis XIII twirled his moustache proudly and placed his hand upon his hip。

Sire， resumed Treville，as I told you，M。 D’ Artagnan is little more than a boy，and as he has not the honour of being a musketeer，he was dressed as a private citizen。

That is true，sire； there can be no more doubt on that head。
他们叫他离开，可是他回答说他有一颗火枪手的心，而且会全心全意效忠于陛下，所以他要跟几个火枪手呆在一起。
They called upon him，then，to retire，but he answered that he was a musketeer at heart，entirely devoted to your Majesty，and that he would therefore remain with the musketeers。
好个勇敢的小伙子！国王喃喃地说。之后，他就跟他们站在了一起，陛下，他真能算是您手下一员勇将了，朱萨克身上那深深地一剑就是他刺的，也就是这一剑让红衣主教大为恼怒。
Brave young man！ murmured the king。Well，he did remain with them； and your Majesty has in him so firm a champion that it was he who gave Jussac the terrible sword—thrust which has made the cardinal so angry。
是他刺伤了朱萨克吗！国王叫起来——他还是个半大的孩子啊！
He who wounded Jussac！ cried the king—he，a boy！
特雷维尔，这真不可思议！
Treville，that’ simpossible！

It is as I have the honour to relate it to your Majesty。

Jussac，one of the first swordsmen in the kingdom？

Well，sire，for once he found his master。

But this encounter，sire，is quite out of the ordinary conditions of a duel。
只是打了一架，红衣主教的五名卫士攻击我的三名火枪手还有达塔尼昂，这就是证据。It is a brawl； and the proof is that there were five of the cardinal’ sguards against my three musketeers and M。 D’ Artagnan。
没错，国王说道，但别介意，特雷维尔，还是从后面上来吧。
That is true， said the king； but never mind，Treville； come anyway by the back staircase。
特雷维尔微微地笑了。
Treville smiled。
不过，他觉得能使这位年轻的国王对他的师傅产生反感，这个收获已经不小了，于是他恭敬地向国王鞠了一躬，得到允许后退了出来。
But as it was already something to have prevailed upon this child to rebel against his master，he saluted the king respectfully，and with this agreement took leave of him。
当天晚上，三位火枪手就得知了他们有幸去觐见国王的消息。
That evening the three musketeers were informed of the honour which was bestowed upon them。
由于他们早就见过国王，所以这个消息并没令他们太兴奋，可是达塔尼昂凭着他那加斯科涅人非凡的想象力，幻想着自己的大好前程，做了一夜的美梦。
As they had long been acquainted with the king，they were not much excited by the circumstance； but D’ Artagnan，with his Gascon imagination，saw in it his future fortune，and passed the night in golden dreams。
德特雷维尔先生通知他的三个火枪手和他们的伙伴早上六点半来见他。
M。 de Treville had ordered his three musketeers and their companion to be with him at half—past six in the morning。
他带他们出发时，没有给他们任何保证或是承诺。
He took them with him，without assuring them or promising them anything。

When they had reached the foot of the back stairs he desired them to wait。
不到十分钟，国王的房门就开了，德特雷维尔先生看见国王往门外走来。
Ten minutes had scarcely passed away when the door of the king’ scloset opened，and M。 de Treville saw the king advancing to the door。
啊！你来了，特雷维尔。
—Ah！ that’ syou，Treville。
你的火枪手们在哪呢？
Where are your musketeers？
我可是让你把他们都带来的啊。
I told you to bring them with you。
你为何没照办？
Why have you not done so？
他们都在下面等候，陛下，只要您恩准，拉谢奈可以马上叫他们上来。
They are below，sire； and with your permission La Chesnaye will tell them to come up。
好，好，快叫他们上来吧。
Yes，yes，let them come up immediately。
已经快八点了，九点钟我还有个会晤。
It is nearly eighto’ clock，and at nine I expect a visit。
特雷维尔，你进来。
Come in，Treville。
这时，国王的贴身男仆拉谢奈领着三个火枪手和达塔尼昂上了楼梯。
At that moment the three musketeers and D’ Artagnan，led by La Chesnaye，the King’ svalet appeared at the top of the staircase。
请进，勇士们，国王说，进来吧，我有话要训你们。
Come in，my braves， said the king，come in； I have a scolding for you。
所以，陛下您也看到了，他们都后悔极了，今天就是来向您请罪的。
Therefore，sire，your Majesty sees that they are come quite contrite and repentant to offer you their excuses。

D’ Artagnan，who understood that it was to him this compliment was addressed，approached，assuming a most despondent air。
天啊，你不是说是个年轻人吗！
Why，you told me he was a young man！
这分明是个孩子嘛，特雷维尔，只是个孩子！
This is a boy，Treville，a mere boy！
您难道是说，就是他让朱萨克挨了那么惨的一剑？
Do you mean to say that it was he who bestowed that severe thrust upon Jussac？

Without reckoning， said Athos，that if he had not rescued me from the hands of Cahusac，I should not now have the honour of making my very humble reverence to your Majesty。

Monsieur de Treville，as the king my father would have said。

But at this sort of work many doublets must be slashed and many swords broken。

达塔尼昂于是就仔细地讲了一遍那天的情况。
D’ Artagnan related the adventure in all its details。

This is all very well， murmured the king。
但是这样就够了，先生们，你们明白了吧，够了。
But that’ squite enough，gentlemen； please to understand that’ senough。
你们已经报了仇了，也该满意了。
You have taken your revenge and you ought to be satisfied。
如果陛下满意，特雷维尔说，我们也就满意了。
If your Majesty is， said Treville，we are。
是的，我认为可以了。国王说着，从拉谢奈手里抓了一把金币放到了达塔尼昂手里。Oh yes，I am， added the king，taking a handful of gold from La Chesnaye and putting it into the hand of D’ Artagnan。
这个，他说，就是表示我的满意的证明。
Here， said he，is a proof of my satisfaction。
眼下盛行的自尊之情，在那个时候还没有开始流行。
At this period the ideas of pride which are in fashion in our days did not prevail。
所以达塔尼昂直接从国王手里接过了钱，丝毫没有感到屈辱。
A gentleman received money directly from the king’ shand，and was not in the least humiliated。
他大大方方地把那四十金币放进口袋里，而且还真诚地向国王表示了谢意。
D’ Artagnan put his forty pistoles into his pocket without any scruple； on the contrary，he thanked his Majesty most heartily。
看，国王看看钟说——看，已经八点半了，你们退下吧，我说过，九点钟还有人要来见我。
There， said the king，looking at a clock—there now，as it is half—past eight，you may retire； for，as I told you，I expect some one at nine。
先生们，谢谢各位的忠心。
Thanks for your devotion，gentlemen。
我可以继续信赖各位，对吗？
I may continue to rely upon it，may I not？
哦，陛下！四个火枪手异口同声地喊道，我们愿为陛下粉身碎骨！
O sire！ cried the four companions with one voice，we would allow ourselves to be cut to pieces in your Majesty’ sservice！
好的，好的，不过还是完整些会更好，那样就会用处更大了。
Well，well，but keep whole； that will be better，and you will be more useful to me。
特雷维尔，等他们退下后，国王低声叫道，既然你的火枪队里没有空缺，而且我们也有过规定，要当上火枪手必须要有一段实习期，那就让这个年轻人到你妹夫埃萨尔的那一队禁军里去吧。
Treville， added the king in a low voice，as the others were retiring，as you have no room in your musketeers，and as we have besides decided that a novitiate is necessary before entering that corps，place this young man in the company of guards commanded by your brother—in—law，M。 des Essarts。
哈，真的！
Ah，zounds！
想想红衣主教得知这件事后的那张脸，我就开心得不得了。
I enjoy in advance the face the cardinal will make。
他一定会气得发疯，不过我可管不了那么多了。
He will be furious； but I don’ tcare。
我在做应该做的事。
I am doing what is right。
国王说着向特雷维尔挥挥手，于是特雷维尔先生退了出来，找到了火枪手们，他们正在跟达塔尼昂一起分那四十个金币。
And the king waved his hand to Treville，who left him and rejoined the musketeers，whom he found sharing the forty pistoles with D’ Artagnan。
而红衣主教呢，果然正像国王所预料的那样，大为恼怒，整整一个星期都没来和国王打牌，即使如此，国王还是照样对他和颜悦色，每次见他都要非常关切地问一句，
And the cardinal，as his Majesty had said，was really furious，so furious that for a whole week he absented himself from the king’ scard—table，which did not prevent the king from being as complacent to him as possible，or，whenever he met him，from asking in the kindest tone，
嗨，红衣主教阁下，您那可怜的朱萨克现在怎么样了？
Well，cardinal，how fares it with that poor Jussac of yours？
