Lord of the World

Robert Hugh Benson
Robert Hugh Benson (1871 - 1914) was the youngest son of the Archbishop of Canterbury. After college Benson was ordained as a priest in the Church of England. While on a trip to the Middle East Benson began doubting the Church of England and eventually joined the Community of the Resurrection. In 1903 he became a Roman Catholic. In 1904 he was ordained as a priest. Lord of the World is an apocalyptic novel set several generations in the future. Religion has been ignored or suppressed. People are either socialist or humanist. There is one world government that falls into the hands of the anti-Christ. The story tells of a priest who becomes pope. There is another man identical in appearance to the pope who becomes "Lord of the World."

This unusual illustrated book with its spectacular photographs is devoted to the complex structures and manifestations to be found in nature. In each of the three main chapters - Earth, Water, and Plants - apparently simple motifs become complex photographic landscapes, nature's works of art. From geological formation in Arizona and Iceland's geysers to pink flamingos-these artistic photographs follow nature's tracks and renew awareness of its fragile beauty.

Robert M. Adams's celebrated translation of Utopia has been meticulously revised for the Second Edition of this Norton Critical Edition as have the accompanying annotations.Backgrounds is designed to assist student readers in an appreciation of Utopia by shedding light on the different points of view contemporary with More's work.Included are new selections from Saint Benedict and Tasso, as well as a medieval satire on the land of Cockayne. The Humanist Circle, a carefully chosen selection of letters, includes another important contribution by Erasmus.Criticism includes five new thought-provoking essays by Alistair Fox, Edward L. Surtz, G. R. Elton, Northrop Frye, and Robert M. Adams. Also new are selections from two modern anti-utopias or quasi-utopias—Aldous Huxley's Brave New World and B. F. Skinner's Walden Two—plus a selection from Edward Bellamy's once futuristic but now almost contemporary Looking Backward, which may be compared and contrasted with More's masterpiece.
