- 《史记》是我国第一部通史。不同于之前以年代为次的《春秋》这样的“编年史”，也不同于以地域为限的《战国策》等这样的“国别史”，更不同于以文告档卷形式保存下来的《尚书》这样的“政治史”，通史是一部包括上下几千年，包罗各个方面又融会贯通、脉络清晰的史书。纪传体通史这一体例是司马迁的首创，包括本纪、表、书、世家、列传这几部分，从此历代的史书，从汉书到明史，虽然名目有所改变，但大类都有本纪和传，都沿袭了史记的体例。
